The Herald-News from Passaic, New Jersey (2024)

HERALD NEWS Saturday, June 28, 1997 OBITUARIES Bernice Germain, 54, Planned Children's Hospital By DONNA MITCHELL Herald News WAYNE Bernice (Rubin) Germain, a hospital administrator who was instrumental in laying the groundwork for what nearly became New Jersey's first children's hospital, died Thursday. She was 54. Mrs. Germain was vice president for planning at the United Medical Center, Newark, and executive director of its foundation. In 1987, while serving as vice president for planning, Mrs.

Germain secured all the approval for certification to turn the United Medical Center into the Children's Hospital of New Jersey. At the time, the hospital was to be only one of seven to provide a full range of subspecialty pediatric care in the country, said Donald R. Leishman, a longtime friend and companion. "This was a major stage in child care in New Jersey to have all services in one hospital," Leishman said. "More hospitals, have become children's hospitals since then." United Medical Center fell into financial trouble, however, and went out of business before the children's hospital ever got off the ground, said Jim Hull, a consultant to the hospital during that time.
