Love it or hate it, the of weed is a burning issue for many when it comes to whether or not to fully legalize its usage. Floridians will be seeing a recreation- al marijuana legalization measure on their November ballots, deciding if the state will be the next to allow its resi- dents to light it up without a medical marijuana card. The initiated constitutional amend- ment, known as Amendment 3, seeks to legalize recreational marijuana, allow- ing those 21 and older to have up to 3 ounces and up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.

It would need to receive a superma- jority, or of the vote. Early voting for the 2024 general election begins Oct. 21. In the midst of critics and politicians led by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ar- guing about the potential problems of marijuana legalization, many have highlighted another issue with the plant: its smell.

Its pungent odor might be enough for some to still want marijuana banned, claiming it is a of issue. And not just Florida. Other states and other countries have com- plained about the stench, whether from communal in public areas or the surge of vape showing up, accord- ing to Bloomberg. Neighbors have even sued one another over the smell alone, as seen in a 2020 civil case where a women claimed she was by marijuana smoke from her nearby neighbor. What does marijuana smell like? It depends on the naturally occurring chemical compounds, called terpenes, that are dominant in the strain.

But typically, those complaining of the stench comment on the skun- ky of popular strains. New Scientist highlighted a chemical responsible for earthy, pun- gent smell a molecule called 3-methyl- but-2-en-1-yl (321MBT). Don Wright at Don Wright Asso- ciates, an odor monitoring and control consultancy, told Bloomberg in its re- port that his team found the molecule after focusing on the smallest possible group of chemicals that matched the characteristic. They also used an indoor greenhouse experiment to show that the concentra- tions of volatile sulphur compounds containing 321MBT increase cantly during the last stage for cannabis plants. What does it compare to? Wright said the molecule is responsible for the smell that occurs in beer packaged in clear bottles after it has been exposed to sun- light and the infamous smell of from mammalian skunks.

However, the introduction of other chemicals to a strain can produce a dif- ferent smell and mask the strange odor, such as a or smell. Even if the amendment wins at the polls in November, marijuana in- stantly become legal in Florida. The process of taking a successful referendum and enacting it into law can possibly take several months. If it passes, the state legislature has to make decisions on how exactly to implement the law, including regulations around how much marijuana could be purchased at one time, potency limits, rules around marketing, and any other concerns that arise during the process, such as where smoking is allowed. Smart Safe Florida has also shared on its own site that the legislature re- tains the power to enact regulations that ensure clean, family-friendly pub- lic spaces, just as it does with tobacco and alcohol. Safe Florida is committed to safe access to cannabis products while empowering the legislature to enact comprehensive regulations, spanning from cultivation to consumption, in- cluding where people may or may not smoke in public.
