George Lindsey Obituary - 2021 (2024)

Mr. George Benjamin Lindsey, Jr., age 95, passed away Friday, October 1, 2021 at his residence.

Mr. Lindsey was born August 24, 1926 in Rentz, Georgia; he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, the late Dorothy Louise Lindsey and his parents, George B. Lindsey, Sr. and Alma Achord Lindsey.

A veteran, schoolteacher and sports enthusiast, George has lived his entire life in Rentz, except for a few years living away while serving in the United States Army and while teaching in Pitts, Georgia. He was a GA Southern graduate and well-known basketball coach at Pitts, Dexter and Jeffersonville High Schools, where he has three state titles and a 64 game winning streak to his credit.

Primarily a physical education teacher at the high school level, Lindsey later spent time as an automotive instructor at Heart of Georgia Technical College, now Oconee Fall Line Technical College.

He was the owner of Lindsey’s Hardware, Auto Parts and Wrecker Service, which he founded in 1956, the co-founder of 441 Speedway and was a board member for Progressive Rural Telephone Company, where he served as treasurer. He was also one of a handful of Laurens Countians that was given the honor of “Torch Bearer” for the 1996 Olympic Games.

He was a greatasset to the community and was known for doing what he could to help others.

He is survived by his son, Randy Wayne Lindsey of Rentz, nieces and nephews, and loyal employees and close friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 4, 2021 at Rentz Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Vann and Rev. Grady Mimbs officiating. Burial will follow at Rentz City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 until funeral hour at Rentz Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Mark Joiner, Earl Lord, Nathaniel Smith, Sam Andrews, Don Bryant and Durrell Woodard. Directors of Progressive Rural Telephone will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The Lindsey family and Townsend Brothers Funeral Home respectfully asks all in attendance to wear a mask and to continue to follow the social distancing guidelines.
