Can I walk into the MA RMV without an appointment? ›

An appointment is required to visit to conduct License or ID related transactions. Note that Registration-related transactions can be performed at an RMV Service Center without an appointment.

Bring all required documents, fees, and the completed application to any RMV Service Center. If you are a AAA member, you can make a reservation to renew your driver's license/ID at a AAA location. Visit aaa.com/appointments to schedule your visit.

If you qualify, make a reservation for “Real ID” at the MA AAA Office of your choice, record the application form and BRING ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR REAL ID TO YOUR APPOINTMENT. Please see our services, as well as related forms and pricing details here.

Renewing Your License in Person

Some centers have a strict no-walk-in policy, so make sure you check hours and make an appointment, if necessary. Take any required tests, if applicable. You will be required to at least take a vision exam. Review and change your name, address, and other information if necessary.

Your Massachusetts license expires every five years on your birthday. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles no longer mails out renewal notices. If you are stopped by police for any infraction and you have an expired license, it is a criminal offense. You could be arrested and your vehicle towed.

You'll need to prove your: U.S. citizenship or lawful presence via a current passport or birth certificate or a current visa or green card. Social Security number via a Social Security card.

To complete the REAL ID application process, you will need to make an appointment at a participating AAA branch and bring your original documents. Use a PO Box? Proof of a physical address is required.

Permit/License/ID Related Transactions

If you need to complete an in-person permit, license, or ID transaction, you are required to make a reservation online. To schedule your appointment, visit Mass.Gov/RMV and select Make or Cancel a Reservation option or scan the QR code using your smartphone.

When your registration is canceled, the RMV will provide you with a registration cancellation receipt. Once your registration is canceled, you must recycle or destroy your license plates. Plates can be cut in half and discarded; or you can recycle destroyed plates if your town accepts them at the local recycle center.

UPDATE: Beginning on April 1, 2021, the Massachusetts RMV has opened up appointments for REAL ID cards. If you already renewed your Mass license or ID online (between June 2020 and April 2021) with the intention of getting a free upgrade to the REAL ID, you may begin booking your upgrade appointment now.

The RMV will mail your replacement driver's license to your mailing address on record with 7-10 days.

If you just don't have the time or patience, you can nix the appointment and opt to walk in during a slow period. If you want to get in and out of the DMV in the shortest time possible, go: Bright and early when the DMV opens. Before the lunch hour, before noon.
